Anti-fascism and the desire for freedom, independence, and justice unite our countries today, said the Russian ambassador.

On Saturday, Venezuelans took part in a march in Caracas to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Army’s victory over Nazi Germany, which took place on May 9, 1945.

Tributes to the Soviet feat take place every year in Russia and other countries around the world. On this occasion, representatives of the Popular Front will transfer particles of the “Eternal Flame” to more than 130 Russian cities and 21 countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa.

This year, the eternal flame was handed over to Venezuela’s ambassador to Russia, Jesus Salazar, and later transported to Caracas by Popular Front representative Pavel Berezhansky.

“We are very happy to carry this flame. Besides symbolizing our people’s victory, it brings together many families. We take it to different countries with which we have friendly ties to share how our heroes are remembered and honored in Russia,” said Anastasia Feonova, a Popular Front member.

“This year, I am bringing the flame of memory to Venezuela. I truly hope that this piece of the Eternal Flame helps people remember their history,” said Pavel Berezhansky.

“We are very grateful to Venezuela for giving us this opportunity to pay tribute to our ancestors and to all those who fought in World War II, a period during which 20 million people died in our country. It is a very important date for all of us, and we want history to never be forgotten,” said Eugenia Medvedeva, a Russian citizen living in Caracas.

“My father took part in World War II. He survived after fighting in the defense of Kerch. He was severely wounded. They evacuated him just in time, and all the comrades who stayed behind died,” recalled Russian-Venezuelan citizen Vera Ridaiknika.

Along the Los Proceres Boulevard, the participants in the Caracas march paid tribute to the 20 million men and women who changed the course of human history. They did so with banners, images showing the faces of the fallen, and the flags of Venezuela, Russia, Belarus, and the Soviet Union.

“This is a remembrance of the soldiers who defeated fascism and a reminder that the fight for peace, truth, and freedom continues. Anti-fascism and the desire for freedom, independence, and justice are the values that unite our countries today,” said Sergey Melik-Bagdasarov, Russia’s Ambassador to Venezuela.

The Bolivarian government organized the commemorative activities for the anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany to demonstrate Venezuela’s commitment to the pursuit of a multipolar world and to the international fight against contemporary fascism.

“The Bolivarian Revolution knows it has an enormous responsibility before Venezuela, Latin America, and the world. The Venezuelan people are organized to stop fascism, which seeks to seize political power in our nation at any cost. We must prevent it,” said Rander Peña, Venezuela’s Vice Minister for Latin America.
