A Milestone in Bilateral Relations

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held in the Venezuelan capital, with Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez and Colombian Minister of Trade Diana Marcela Morales leading the event.

This agreement highlights Presidents Maduro and Petro’s dedication to closer integration between their countries.

Vice President Rodriguez highlighted the strategic importance of this memorandum, noting that it lays the groundwork for a binational area characterized by peace, unity, and economic development.

“We are taking a historic and strategic step. This memorandum sets the foundation for a binational zone of peace, unity, and economic growth,” Rodriguez said, emphasizing that the commercial exchange between the two countries exceeded $2.2 billion in 2024, demonstrating the economic growth resulting from implemented policies.

Minister Morales echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that reopening the border has been crucial for boosting the regional economy.

“This integration allows us to strengthen strategic sectors such as agrifood, energy, and industry, benefiting cross-border communities,” Morales stated.

Combating Corruption and Narcotrafficking

Moreover, Alfredo Saade Vergel, Chief of Staff of the Colombian Presidency, underscored the necessity of fighting against corrupt mafias and narcotrafficking that have plagued both nations.

“We must inform the world about these political mafias allied with narcotrafficking that have attempted to destroy our sister nations,” Saade Vergel declared.

He added that joint security mechanisms are being reviewed to eradicate criminal gangs and ensure entrepreneurs’ safety.

Next Steps and Future Plans

The memorandum signed on Thursday is the first of several agreements expected to be finalized in the coming months.

According to Rodriguez, plans are underway to establish additional binational zones of peace in regions such as Táchira, Zulia, and Norte de Santander, following the guidelines set by the leaders of both countries.

The future endeavors include advancing projects like electrical interconnection, investments in gas and oil, and regulating currency exchange operations at the border to facilitate trade.

The goal is to create a seamless and prosperous economic corridor that benefits both nations.

Legacy of Integration and Unity

Vice President Rodriguez invoked the legacy of the Liberator Simon Bolivar and his dream of a united Great Homeland.

“We are fulfilling the dream of Bolivar, Chavez, Maduro, and Petro: integrating our peoples to build a future of prosperity,” she concluded.

This sentiment resonates deeply, as the new agreement signifies the beginning of a new era in Venezuela-Colombia relations, marked by economic cooperation, security, and social development in the shared border region.

Mutual Prosperity and Peace

This historic binational agreement between Venezuela and Colombia is more than just a formal document; it represents a bold step towards a future of mutual prosperity and peace.

By focusing on key strategic sectors and fostering a collaborative environment, both nations are poised to overcome past challenges and forge ahead together.

This initiative not only strengthens their economic ties but also sets a precedent for regional cooperation and stability.

As the world watches, Venezuela and Colombia are embarking on a journey that could transform the landscape of their bilateral relations, bringing benefits to their citizens and setting an example of peace and unity for other nations to follow.

The success of this Special Economic Zone for Peace will undoubtedly serve as a testament to what can be achieved when countries come together with a shared vision and commitment to progress.
