Former US President Joe Biden (2021-2025) was diagnosed with prostate cancer in an “aggressive” state with metastases to the bones, his office announced this Sunday in a statement.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,” according to a statement from Biden’s personal office.
Biden’s office stated that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Friday , characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management.”
The Gleason score is a measure of the aggressiveness of prostate cancer. A score of 9, corresponding to Group 5, indicates that the cancer is very aggressive and rapidly growing.
It means that prostate cancer has spread from the prostate to the bones. Metastasis implies that the cancer cells have detached from the original tumor and traveled through the bloodstream or lymphatic system to other places in the body, in this case, the bones.
The news comes at a time when the former president has returned to the limelight after his term ended earlier this year. Biden gave his first post-presidential interview to the BBC this month and sat down with “The View” after that.
Interviews are given amid a plethora of books detailing the last year of Biden’s administration, including accusations that his mental acuity slipped while in office.
In “The View,” Biden denied those reports, saying they were wrong. The former First Lady also criticized the report on Biden’s mental acuity while in office, noting that “the people who wrote those books were not in the White House with us.”
Former President Biden, after being declared fit to continue in office in early 2024 and undergoing a successful cancer removal in 2023, decided not to seek re-election in 2024, instead supporting the candidacy of his vice president Kamala Harris, who was finally defeated by Donald Trump.
