Sources from the Electoral Court, said that the reported figure was taken from the flow of voters between 8:00 and 12:00 local time (11:00 and 15:00 GMT) and added that a new report will be delivered in the afternoon.

In this election, voters will elect the mayors who will govern the 19 departments (provinces) of the South American country, the councilors who will legislate in the departmental parliaments, and the mayors who will be in charge of the different municipalities.

Among those who went to vote were the country’s president, Yamandú Orsi, and former presidents Luis Lacalle Pou and Julio María Sanguinetti. José Mujica, on the other hand, did not, on the recommendation of his personal doctor.

Speaking to the press, Orsi celebrated that these elections are another celebration of democracy, although he admitted that there is a “kind of fatigue” in people.

Along the same lines, Sanguinetti indicated that “everyone” agrees that the election period is very long and that there is a kind of “citizen fatigue.”

With this Sunday’s election, Uruguay will close a cycle of elections that began in June of last year with the internal elections, followed by the presidential and parliamentary elections in October and then a second round in November, in which the president for the 2025-2030 period was elected.

Several of the mayoral candidates from different departments (provinces) for the different political forces also voted in the first few hours.

Two of them are the main candidates in the capital. Mario Bergara, of the ruling Frente Amplio (Wide Front), and Martín Lema, of the Republican Coalition, made up of different forces, including the historical Nacional and Colorado parties.

The polling stations for the departmental and municipal elections that Uruguay is facing this Sunday and in which some 2.7 million citizens are called to vote compulsorily opened at 8:00 local time (11:00 GMT).
