Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi paid tribute this Wednesday to the late former president José “Pepe” Mujica, who passed away at 89, during his wake at the Legislative Palace. Moved by the massive outpouring of grief from Uruguayans, Orsi highlighted the humility and legacy of the leftist leader, remembering him as “a friend and comrade” whose influence transcended borders.
A Nation’s Emotional Farewell
President Orsi expressed awe at the spontaneous public mourning: “People of all ages—shopkeepers, elders, children—came with homemade tributes. You see flags at half-mast hung with broomsticks and understand what we’ve lost.”
The People’s President
Mujica’s famous saying “No one is above anyone” wasn’t just words—he lived it daily, whether hosting world leaders or sharing mate with farmers. His 2013 UN speech criticizing consumerism made him a global icon of authenticity—so much so, as Orsi noted, “abroad, they know us for football or Mujica.”
Debate as a Political Virtue
Unlike leaders who demand obedience, Mujica thrived on disagreement. “He’d get angry in debates,” Orsi recalled, “but that’s where his best ideas emerged—he proved politics means negotiating, not dictating.”
A Legacy Beyond Controversy
When asked about criticisms of Mujica’s guerrilla past, Orsi responded: “He taught us to choose our own truths—accept what resonates, question what doesn’t.”
A private burial will be held Thursday at Mujica’s beloved farm, closing a chapter for Uruguay but cementing his enduring message: that integrity outshines power, and simplicity speaks louder than wealth.
