United Nations Resident Representative in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, has issued an urgent plea for a cessation of hostilities in North Darfur to allow life-saving humanitarian aid to reach civilians trapped by intensifying conflict and mass displacement.

Crisis in El Fasher and Displacement Camps

The war, now in its third year, has worsened conditions across North Darfur, with large-scale displacement affecting hundreds of thousands.

  • 300,000 displaced people in Tawila camp require immediate assistance.
  • 180,000 remain stranded in Zamzam camp, seized by Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April after relentless shelling and incursions.
  • 83,000 individuals fled to El Fasher, now suffering severe shortages of food, water, and medicine due to the RSF-imposed siege.
  • 190,000 displaced in Abu Shouk camp face near-daily RSF attacks.

Calls for Humanitarian Access

“The situation in Abu Shouk and Zamzam is catastrophic. Civilians are trapped, and aid cannot reach those most in need,” Salami stated, urging an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian pauses.

Food Security Efforts Amid Famine Risk

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched seed distribution campaigns in West Darfur, the hardest-hit area for food insecurity, providing 50,000 kilograms of sorghum seeds to 5,000 families, benefiting 25,000 people.

With 79% of Darfur’s population in need of humanitarian assistance, the UN warns of an impending humanitarian catastrophe unless hostilities cease and aid is granted full access to the region.
