‘We’ll teach them how to run from an alligator,’ Trump said.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump mocked migrants set to be transferred to a detention center dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” saying they’ll have to learn how to run from alligators.

“We’re going to teach them how to run from a gator. Don’t run in a straight line — run like this,” Trump said, gesturing with his hand in a zigzag motion. “Your chances of escaping go up by about 1%,” he added with a slight smile.
The Republican politician visited the new detention center for undocumented migrants alongside Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
The detention facility was built in just two weeks on the runway of an abandoned airport west of Miami. Authorities expect it to house up to 5,000 migrants as part of Trump’s anti-immigration efforts.
The name “Alligator Alcatraz” references both San Francisco’s iconic prison — which Trump has ordered to be reopened soon — and the alligators that populate the area surrounding the detention center.
Officials say the presence of the reptiles will reduce the risk of escapes. The Department of Homeland Security also recently alluded to the alligators, posting a photo on X showing several alligators wearing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) caps outside a prison.
The center’s opening, however, has drawn criticism from local politicians and environmental groups. Critics say the speed with which the facility was built is incompatible with environmental regulations.
“Alligator Alcatraz” is located in a natural area rich in wetlands and ecological value, home to diverse wildlife and vegetation. It sits just a few dozen kilometers from Everglades National Park. Environmental groups organized a protest near the detention center on Tuesday at the same time as Trump’s visit.
