The White House and California clashed over Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to quell protests in Los Angeles.

On Monday, Tom Homan, the “Border Czar” during President Donald Trump’s administration, clarified his controversial remarks and denied that there are no concrete plans to arrest California Gov. Gavin Newsom over recent protests in Los Angeles against immigration raids.

“We’re not in discussions about arresting Newsom,” Homan said in an interview with Fox News, after telling NBC News over the weekend that both Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass could be arrested.

“The reporter asked me, ‘Well, could Governor Newsom or Mayor Bass be arrested?’ I said, ‘Well, no one is above the law. If they cross the line and commit a crime, of course they can be,'” Homan said.

He emphasized that people have the right to protest under the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech, but warned that the Trump administration will not tolerate anyone “obstructing law enforcement.”

Over the weekend, the White House and California clashed over Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to quell protests in Los Angeles against immigration raids carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

In an interview with MSNBC, Newsom accused the former president of manufacturing “an artificial crisis” in California over the enforcement of anti-immigration policies. The Democratic governor also responded to Homan in a defiant tone, challenging him to follow through on his threats.

“He’s a tough guy, so why doesn’t he do it? He knows where to find me. But you know what? Keep your hands off 4-year-old girls trying to get an education. Keep your hands off the poor people just trying to live their lives, pay their taxes, and who have been living here for 10 years,” Newsom said.

“The horror, the fear. What the hell is this guy? Come for me, arrest me. Just get it over with, tough guy. Why doesn’t he do that? He knows where to find me… That kind of bloviating is exhausting. So, Tom, arrest me. Let’s go,” he added.
