U.S. President Donald Trump threatened imminent action against Cuba at the ‘Shield of the Americas’ Summit on Saturday, March 7, saying “Cuba is in its last moments of life as it is,” despite the current belligerent focus being on Iran.

“They are negotiating with Marco [Rubio]”, he once again claimed, although Cuban authorities have consistently denied such allegations.

On January 29, the White House released a memorandum designating the Cuban government an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the United States, effectively threatening to impose tariffs on countries supplying fuel to the island — an energy blockade that adds to the decades-long sanctions that have exacerbated the economic crisis in the Caribbean nation.

“Many of you came today and said ‘I hope you can take care of Cuba’ (…) I’ll take care of it,” the Republican told right-wing heads of government attending the summit.

On February 25, a non-government-affiliated speedboat from the U.S., intercepted in Cuban waters, opened fire on border guards. The ensuing clash left four dead and six injured. Havana is probing the incident as a “terrorist infiltration attempt,” with Washington vowing full cooperation.
