Trump made the remarks on the sidelines of the NATO summit going on in The Hague. Asked if the United States would strike again if Iran rebuilt its nuclear enrichment program, Trump said: “Sure.”
He also said Washington will not allow Tehran to continue enriching uranium, including using military means. “We will not let that happen. Number one, militarily. I think we will end up having somewhat of a relationship with Iran,” he said.
In statements to the press in The Hague, Trump called the U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear program facilities “a tremendous victory” and “a tremendous blow,” asserting that the Iranians “are not going to have a bomb, and they’re not going to enrich” uranium in the coming period.
“The last thing they want to do now is enrich anything. They want to recover. And we’re not going to allow it. First, militarily, we’re not going to allow it. I think in the end we’ll have some sort of relationship with Iran. That’s how I see it. Look, I’ve had a relationship over the last four days, they agreed to the cease-fire, it was a very balanced agreement,” Trump said.
The U.S. president emphasized that both Israel and Iran accepted the cease-fire. “Both said, ‘Enough.’ Both of them said it,” he stated.
“I don’t think they’ll try again. They’re going to focus on their oil, on their missiles… but I think they’ve had enough,” Trump said, because the U.S. attack “was a tremendous attack, a complete obliteration. Iran said ‘enough.’ And Israel said it too, very smart,” he added.
“It’s like two kids in the schoolyard. They fight hard, and then they stop. You can’t stop them, you have to let them fight for two or three minutes,” Trump continued, insisting that the U.S. strike “ended the war. If we hadn’t done it, they’d still be fighting right now.”
On Wednesday, the U.S. president is also meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. When asked what they would discuss at the meeting, Trump said: “Zelenskyy is good people. I’ll see him today. I suppose we’ll talk about Ukraine.”
He also said he is “making a lot of progress” on the Ukraine issue because he has spoken “a lot” with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “He was very kind, even offered help with Iran. But I told him, ‘I don’t need help with Iran, help me with Russia.’ But he was kind,” Trump explained.
Trump is attending the main session of the NATO summit in The Hague, where the U.S. president hopes all Allies will support a defense spending increase to 5% of GDP, despite Spain’s reluctance to endorse the figure. “But we’ll have to wait for the vote; sometimes crazy things happen,” he added today.
He also said he “fully” supports NATO’s Article 5 on collective defense, a clause of the North Atlantic Treaty that obliges members to defend one another in the event of an attack. Trump had previously cast doubt on this key article.
