His new statements add further uncertainty to the trade dialogue process between Beijing and Washington.

On Friday, President Donald Trump accused China of violating the trade agreement it reached with the United States to reduce the high tariffs imposed by Washington — a deal that, according to the president, had saved Beijing “from a very bad situation.”

“Two weeks ago China was in grave economic danger! The very high tariffs I set made it virtually impossible for China to trade into the United States marketplace which is, by far, number one in the world,” he said.

“We went, in effect, cold turkey with China, and it was devastating for them. Many factories closed and there was, to put it mildly, ‘civil unrest,’” he added.

“I saw what was happening and didn’t like it, for them, not for us. I made a fast deal with China in order to save them from what I thought was going to be a very bad situation, and I didn’t want to see that happen.”

“Because of this deal, everything quickly stabilized and China got back to business as usual. Everybody was happy! That is the good news!!! The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, has totally violated its agreement with us. So much for being Mr. Nice Guy!” the U.S. president emphasized.

Both economic powers agreed to a truce in their tariff war, lowering U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, while Beijing reduced its tariffs on U.S. products from 125% to 10%.

According to the agreement, these conditions were to remain in place for three months while delegations from both countries negotiated a more lasting deal, although analysts have said it likely would not guarantee full reconciliation between the two nations.

Trump’s new statements add further uncertainty to the trade dialogue process between Beijing and Washington, which in recent days announced it would revoke visas for Chinese students with ties to the Communist Party — a move that could affect thousands of students in the U.S. and that China has labeled a “discriminatory” decision.
