Thousands of people marched this Saturday in Chile to denounce the hundreds of deaths from hunger that have been recorded in the Gaza Strip, a territory devastated by Israeli military action and blocked from receiving the humanitarian aid it requires.

Despite the low temperatures recorded in the Chilean capital this morning, protesters arrived en masse at what was characterized as: “The march of empty pots,” in reference to the serious food crisis currently being experienced in the Palestinian enclave.

‘Your silence makes you an accomplice. No more genocide,’ read some of the banners and posters carried by the attendees, who dyed the main artery of Santiago with the colors red, black, white and green with hundreds of posters and artistic demonstrations in favor of the Palestinian people.

‘Chile will not be silent in the face of hunger,’ ‘Gaza hurts, as does the indifference of so many,’ ‘There will be no forgiveness or forgetting for the genocides and their accomplices,’ the posters stated.

According to figures from international organizations and Palestinian authorities, the conflict in the Strip has resulted in more than 61,000 people killed by the Israeli army, in addition to some 200 who have died due to famine in recent days.

In January 2024, Chile, together with Mexico, presented a request to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate probable war crimes in the context of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

In addition, last September, Chile formally joined South Africa’s accusation of genocide against Israel before the International Court of Justice, the highest court of the United Nations based in The Hague.

The Palestinian community in Chile is the largest outside the Arab world, with about 500,000 people who have managed to integrate virtuously into all sectors of Chilean society.

Chile recognized Palestine as a “free, independent and sovereign” state in 2011, during the first government of Sebastián Piñera.
