On Tuesday, the United States designated as terrorist organizations the Muslim Brotherhood groups in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon, following an executive order signed in November by U.S. President Donald Trump.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Washington will use all available resources to “prevent” these groups from participating in or supporting terrorist activities, citing links to Hamas and Hezbollah.

The Lebanese branch, led by Muhammad Fawzi Taqqosh, was accused of reactivating the al-Fajr Forces and launching rockets against Israel after the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023.

Rubio affirms that the Lebanese Army dismantled a covert military training camp in July 2025 where militants from Hamas and the Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood participated.

The Egyptian and Jordanian factions were also sanctioned for “providing material support” to Hamas, which includes asset freezes for members in the U.S. and a ban on doing business with U.S. citizens.

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna in Egypt, with affiliates throughout the Middle East, including political parties and social organizations that advocate peaceful participation.

Following the 2011 Revolution in Egypt, the group won legislative and presidential elections, but its leader, Mohamed Morsi, was deposed in 2013 by a military coup. Morsi died in prison in 2019, while the organization was outlawed in Egypt and forced underground and into exile.

The affiliate al-Jamaa al-Islamiya in Lebanon is represented in Parliament and supported Hezbollah in the war against Israel in September 2024, demonstrating its regional alignment.

In Jordan, the group’s political arm, Islamic Action Front, won 31 seats in 2024, but was banned in 2025 on charges of conspiracy, which reflects tensions with local authorities.
