“The enemy’s firing positions are being actively suppressed, and work is ongoing,” Putin said at a government meeting, referring to the buffer zone.

The Russian president noted the necessity to begin restoration work in the border regions of Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk and demine the areas where fighting previously took place.

Putin visited the Kursk region on Tuesday, where the Ukrainian army launched an offensive in August 2024. On April 26, Putin announced that Russia had regained full control of the region.

On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the country’s air defenses shot down 112 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 24 over the Moscow region.

“Starting from 8 p.m. Moscow time on May 22, on-duty air defenses intercepted and destroyed 112 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over Russian regions,” the Defense Ministry said.

Those drones included 24 shot down over the Moscow region, 22 over Crimea, 18 over Tula, and 11 over Kursk. In Yelets, a city in the Lipetsk region, drone debris fell in an industrial area, causing a fire. Eight people were injured as a result, the regional governor said.
