European lawmakers slam deal with Trump, call it a blow to local industries.

On Monday, political groups in the European Parliament harshly criticized the trade deal reached a day earlier by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Imposing a base tariff of 15% is a flagrant violation of World Trade Organization principles and a severe blow to Europe’s industrial competitiveness,” said Jörgen Warborn, trade spokesperson for the European People’s Party.

“At a time of rising geopolitical tensions, a rules-based trading system is more essential than ever to provide predictability for businesses and citizens,” the European lawmaker added, stressing that “the EU must not take any action that could undermine” that goal.

Brando Benifei, trade spokesperson for the Socialists and Democrats, said the deal struck by the European Commission “secured worse terms” than those agreed to by the United Kingdom, which left the EU in 2020 following Brexit.

For Valerie Hayer, president of the Renew Europe liberals, the EU is paying “a high price” for having “a US$50 billion trade surplus with the United States, which is the result of our companies’ merit and the quality of their production.”

“The lesson from this deal: we are an economic giant but a political dwarf. Twenty-seven countries, 450 million consumers, the world’s second-largest economy. An incredible force. And yet, starting this Friday, European products exported to the United States will be hit with 15% tariffs,” she said.

Greens co-president Bas Eickhout said “delusional seems like an accurate term to describe the trade deal,” noting that Brussels has committed to purchasing US$750 billion worth of energy products from the United States.

“What a disgrace! The EU is handing itself over to Trump and openly capitulating: 15% tariffs, US$750 billion in dirty energy purchases, US$600 billion in investments,” European Left President Manon Aubry wrote on social media.
