Thailand and Cambodia continue to be embroiled in border clashes this Sunday for the fourth consecutive day, despite the apparent intention of both parties to reach a ceasefire and the calls for dialogue from international leaders. According to the latest official figures, these events have resulted in at least 32 deaths, dozens of injuries, and thousands of people displaced.

The latest statement from the Cambodian Ministry of Defense accuses Thailand of ‘escalating the conflict instead of reducing it,’ while the Thai forces lament that Phnom Penh ‘does not stop its attacks.’

“Thai forces continue carrying out aggressive incursions into Cambodian territory,” confirmed Cambodian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Maly Socheata at a press conference, who asserted that Bangkok is attacking with “heavy weaponry,” such as cluster bombs and fighter jets.

The Thai Army, for its part, reported assaults by Phnom Penh with artillery shells in the provinces of Surin and Ubon Ratchathani.”

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday, after speaking with the leaders of both countries, that each side had agreed to meet immediately and swiftly negotiate a ceasefire to resolve the clashes along their shared border.

The UN Secretary-General previously called for “utmost restraint” as border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia escalated, prompting the Security Council to convene behind closed doors on Friday to address what was the most serious flare-up between the two Southeast Asian nations in more than a decade.

Bangkok and Phnom Penh have long been embroiled in a historic territorial dispute due to disagreements over the border demarcation, which has sparked multiple clashes over the years — including intermittent fighting between 2008 and 2011 that left around thirty people dead. The conflict flared up again this past May, when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a skirmish between the two armies.
