Emergency teams are still searching for 10 girls and a counselor who were at the Mystic Christian camp when the waters of the Guadalupe River began to rise in the early hours of Friday.
Although local authorities initially did not establish a specific number of missing persons, since many people from outside the region were camping in the area due to the July 4th festivities, the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, estimated today that there are 41 people missing due to the floods.
More rainfall was expected during this Sunday, and the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flood watch until 7 p.m. local time, with additional accumulations of 5 to 10 centimeters of rain, and up to 25 centimeters in some isolated areas.
Since early Friday morning, rescue teams and volunteers have been scouring the affected regions in search of victims: on foot, with the help of dogs or horses, in boats, all-terrain vehicles, and helicopters.
The head of the Texas Emergency Management Division, Nim Kidd, announced the start of recovery efforts after the disaster, including clearing debris and reopening roads. In Kerrville, backhoe excavators were observed removing debris such as trees, metal and destroyed vehicles to clear the streets.
US President Donald Trump today signed a natural disaster emergency declaration to address the flooding in Texas and allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to be activated in the area.
Trump said he has not moved quickly to Texas so as not to hinder emergency work, and suggested that he will travel to the devastated area on Friday.
