Brazilian President Mourns the Death of Vietnamese Leader Nguyen Phu Trong

From 2018 to 2021, the Trong administration spurred rapid economic growth in Vietnam.
On Sunday, Brazilian President Lula da Silva lamented the death of the secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nguyen Phu Trong.

“My deepest condolences to his family, friends, party comrades, and the Vietnamese people,” wrote the leader of Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT) on his social media.
Lula also assured that his administration would continue working to strengthen the bonds of friendship, cooperation, and solidarity between Brazil and Vietnam.
On July 19, Nguyen Phu Trong died in Hanoi at the age of 80 due to natural causes. He had served as general secretary of the CPV Central Committee and secretary of the Central Military Commission since January 2011.
The historic communist leader and protector of Marxist-Leninist ideals served as Vietnam’s president from October 2018 to April 2021. During that period, Trong spurred rapid economic growth through policies such as opening the country to foreign investment.
During his mandate, he also implemented a broad anti-corruption campaign that allowed him to remove several high officials from public administration who had committed illegal actions. In the field of international relations, Trong will be remembered for having implemented the so-called “bamboo diplomacy,” which sought to balance Vietnam’s relations with the United States and China.
On Friday, a state funeral will begin in his honor, and afterward, he will be buried in the Mai Dich cemetery in Hanoi, where the remains of the country’s political leaders and heroes rest.
