Young socialists in Sri Lanka organized a heartfelt tribute to Ernesto Che Guevara on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of his assassination in Bolivia, with the presence of Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and Cuban Ambassador Andrés González.
As part of the tribute, the participants signed a banner to denounce the unilateral and punitive measures of the U.S. government against Cuba, including the blockade of more than 60 years and the “unjust inclusion” of the island in the list of alleged sponsors of terrorism.
The Cuban ambassador, Andrés González, remarked that the occasion was propitious to highlight the development and achievements of the Cuban Revolution in areas such as education, health, sports and social justice, achievements that are hindered by the “genocidal policy of blockade” of the United States.
The diplomat thanked the tradition of “Che Day” organized by the Union of Young Socialists of Sri Lanka, highlighting the leading role of its members in the solidarity movement against the U.S. siege.
González was pleased to be in Horana, the same place where Che was in May 1959. On that visit, right at the beginning of the revolutionary triumph, Che planted a tree that, 66 years later, remains “tall and robust,” being a symbol of the “greatness and strength of his ideas” and the legacy of friendship between the peoples of Sri Lanka and Cuba.
The ambassador concluded by highlighting the characteristics that defined the Heroic Guerrilla: his indomitable courage and will, his unwavering fidelity to his principles, a deep humanism and sense of solidarity, in addition to his great intelligence and personal selflessness that led him to give his life for the cause he defended.
