In a decisive military operation dubbed “Silent Storm,” Somali National Army (SNA) troops and Ugandan forces under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) killed at least 70 al-Shabaab militants in the Lower Shabelle region, according to Somalia’s Ministry of Defense.

The four-day offensive targeted strategic al-Shabaab strongholds in Bariire, a town 73 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu known for its agricultural importance and insurgent activity. The operation was supported by international partners, including U.S. airstrikes near Bariire aimed at degrading al-Shabaab’s operational capacity.

Key Outcomes:

  • 70 militants killed, including senior commanders such as Mohammed Abdallah (anti-tank specialist), Sadam Ibrahim (IED expert), and Abas (infantry leader)

  • Two Somali soldiers died and 12 others were injured during the fighting

  • Two suicide car bombs were intercepted and destroyed before reaching their targets

The Ministry praised the vigilance and bravery of the joint forces, noting that their actions prevented further casualties and breached fortified militant defenses. AUSSOM emphasized that the operation inflicted heavy losses on al-Shabaab and disrupted its command structure.

Strategic Context:

  • Bariire had fallen to al-Shabaab in March 2025 without resistance, becoming a key base for launching attacks

  • The town’s recapture is part of Phase Two of Operation Silent Storm, which aims to liberate Sabiid, Anole, Bariire, and Awdheegle

  • The offensive follows months of setbacks for Somali forces, with al-Shabaab regaining territory across southern Somalia

The Somali government and AU officials reaffirmed their commitment to clearing and holding recaptured towns, stressing that long-term peace depends on sustained control and community protection.
