The 27-year-old gunman named Shane Tamura opened fire around 6 p.m. and died from an apparently self-inflicted injury. The information was later confirmed by Mayor Eric Adams.
“Tamura entered the lobby of 345 Park Avenue on 52nd Street during rush hour and began opening fire at an NYPD officer and others in the lobby. He then called for the elevator, allowing a woman to exit unharmed, before heading up to the 33rd floor, occupied by Rudin Management, where he fired rounds while walking the floor. The gunman died after shooting himself in the chest,” CNN reported.
“His motives are still under investigation… He has a documented mental health history. Police are working to understand why he targeted the office building,” it added.
Earlier, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on X, “At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized.”
One of the victims was an off-duty New York Police Department officer, while the other three were civilians. The gunman came from Las Vegas as authorities found a vehicle with Nevada plates registered to Tamura at the scene, with a rifle case inside. The shooter’s motive is unclear until now.
“A 36-year-old police officer was one of the victims. Didarul Islam was an immigrant from Bangladesh, a father, and his parents’ only son, said NYC Mayor Eric Adams, who met with Islam’s family. He was married with two young sons, and his wife is pregnant with their third child,” CNN reported.
