Previously, Trump said the Mexican president is ‘so afraid’ of the drug cartels that ‘she can’t think clearly.’
On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum avoided responding to U.S. President Donald Trump, who accused her of being “afraid” of drug traffickers for not allowing the U.S. military into Mexican territory, supposedly to combat the cartels.

“I wouldn’t want communication between President Trump and me, between the U.S. and Mexico, to take place through the media and public statements,” she said, thus reiterating that she does not wish to engage in debates stemming from statements made by the Republican politician on social media.
“There are many agreements, and good communication continues. When there are disagreements, they are channeled through official means and personal communication. So, it’s better to leave this matter here so that a debate through the media doesn’t arise,” Sheinbaum told reporters.
On Sunday, Trump said the Mexican president is “so afraid” of the drug cartels that “she can’t think clearly,” referring to Sheinbaum’s rejection of the entry of U.S. soldiers into Mexican territory.
“If Mexico wanted help with the cartels, it would be an honor for us to go and assist her. I told her that. It would be an honor for me to go and do it,” said Trump, who described the Mexican leader as “a lovely woman.”
Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico has complied with the agreements discussed during her phone calls with Trump and reiterated that the country has “a better situation than many—I would say the vast majority—of the countries.”
“We have good communication on other issues such as immigration and security. So, we’re going to maintain that good relationship and, above all, this relationship of respect that has existed between the U.S. government and the Mexican government,” she stated.
Since beginning his second term, Trump has increased pressure on Mexico, claiming that the country is not doing enough to combat fentanyl trafficking or the flow of irregular migration. He also included the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, the Gulf Cartel, the Northeast Cartel, La Familia Michoacana, and the United Cartels on the U.S. terrorist list.
In response to the Trump administration’s demands, however, Sheinbaum deployed 10,000 members of the National Guard to the land border between the United States and Mexico.
