This marked Russia’s first air patrol mission since Ukraine’s drone attack on June 1, known as Operation Spiderweb. The bombers were escorted by Su-30SM and Su-27 fighter jets during the patrol, which lasted more than four hours.
“On certain segments of the route, the strategic bombers were followed by fighter jets from foreign states,” Russian authorities said.
“All flights by aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces are conducted in strict accordance with international rules governing the use of airspace,” they added.
Russia’s strategic aviation fleet — including Tu-160, Tu-95MS and Tu-22M3 bombers — regularly conducts patrols over the neutral waters of the Arctic, North Atlantic, Black Sea, Baltic Sea, Pacific Ocean and other regions.
While these flights have not been halted by the conflict with Ukraine, this is the first one carried out since Operation Spiderweb.
In that operation, Ukraine launched drones from truck trailers near five military airfields, including two in Siberia, destroying at least a dozen Russian strategic aircraft.
