On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Russia and Cuba, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized the strength of bilateral ties and the unity of both countries in the face of Western-imposed challenges.

In an article addressed to Cuban media, Lavrov stated that “Russia and Cuba are on the right side of history,” highlighting the fraternity forged over decades of strategic cooperation and shared resistance.

Lavrov stressed that despite geographical distance, Russia and Cuba maintain a relationship based on solidarity and the defense of shared values such as peace, justice, and sovereignty.

The minister recalled the fundamental role of Fidel Castro in consolidating this alliance, describing him as a symbol of dedication to the Cuban people and an international reference in the struggle for a multipolar and just world.

The Russian diplomat valued Cuba’s contribution during the Great Patriotic War, when Cuban organizations sent essential aid to the Soviet Union.

Lavrov remembered the Cubans who fought and fell on Soviet fronts, emphasizing the shared memory in the fight against fascism and the defense of humanity.

The text reads: On April 3rd, the central ceremony dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between our countries was held at the Palace of the Revolution, with the participation of high-ranking Cuban leaders

Today, Russia and Cuba stand as key allies in international politics, jointly confronting the unilateral sanctions imposed by the West.

Both countries recently signed a joint declaration to counter and mitigate the negative effects of these coercive measures, reaffirming their commitment to international law and the protection of the most vulnerable sectors.

Cooperation extends to coordination in multilateral forums and Cuba’s integration as a BRICS partner starting in 2025, which will strengthen the island’s voice in building a more equitable and democratic world order.

Lavrov emphasized Moscow’s support for Cuba’s BRICS membership and the importance of consolidating a common agenda defending sovereignty and self-determination.

Both governments reject foreign interference and advocate respect for the self-determination of peoples.

Their collaboration includes promoting agreements in areas such as energy, agriculture, education, and security, as well as defending an international order based on sovereign equality and non-intervention-principles enshrined in the UN Charter but often ignored by the West.

Lavrov concluded by recalling Fidel Castro’s words about the power of truth and ideas, reaffirming that Russia and Cuba will continue working “shoulder to shoulder” for the benefit of their peoples and for international peace and security.

This strategic alliance, forged in resistance and solidarity, stands as an example of dignity and sovereignty for the Global South.
