Sudan’s conflict has entered a new phase, as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched unprecedented drone strikes on Port Sudan, weeks after being driven from Khartoum by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

Sudanese political analysts describe the escalation as a “shock and awe” campaign, aiming to demonstrate RSF’s ability to wage war remotely, even after losing territory in central Sudan.

The drone barrage has intensified electricity blackouts, worsening water shortages for Port Sudan residents, in a city long considered a safe zone for government officials, diplomats, and humanitarian organizations.

With drones playing a growing role in Sudan’s three-year war, RSF’s recent suicide drone strikes on Omdurman’s power grid further highlight their expanding use of aerial warfare.

Both SAF and RSF stand accused of war crimes, with RSF singled out for allegations of genocide and mass rape. Meanwhile, RSF leaders claim that SAF operates with Iranian backing, fueling regional tensions.

Analysts warn that the paramilitaries’ evolving tactics—shifting toward aerial assault and infrastructure sabotage—signal a prolonged conflict that could further destabilize Sudan and the Horn of Africa.
