The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) recently conducted nuclear counterattack military drills personally overseen by Kim Jong-un amid increasing military tensions in the region. These maneuvers follow joint exercises between the United States and South Korea, which Pyongyang condemns as provocations and direct threats to its sovereignty.
Demonstration of Nuclear Response Capability
According to the state news agency KCNA, the drills involved the use of 600mm multiple rocket launchers and the tactical ballistic missile Hwasong-11, aiming to familiarize all military units with the operation procedures and rapid transition to a nuclear counterattack posture. Kim Jong-un emphasized that these actions are necessary to respond to “changes in the military situation in sensitive areas caused by the enemy” and highlighted the importance of strengthening nuclear deterrence as a core element of national defense strategy.
The DPRK’s drills come as a reaction to joint military exercises by the United States and South Korea, which include the deployment of strategic bombers and advanced fighter jets on the peninsula. From Pyongyang’s perspective, these maneuvers represent an “extreme war fever” and cannot be considered defensive but rather preparations for a possible invasion or preemptive strike. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the launch of several short-range ballistic missiles by the North, marking an escalation of tensions that have intensified in recent years.

During the exercise, Kim Jong-un reiterated that North Korea’s nuclear force is fundamental to deterring war and ensuring national security and sovereignty. The North Korean leader has pledged to continue developing the nuclear program “at the fastest possible speed,” rejecting any negotiations on denuclearization as long as external threats persist. Images released by state media show Kim supervising missile launches and stressing that the preparation and modernization of the armed forces are essential to facing military pressure from Washington and Seoul.
North Korea maintains that its nuclear counterattack drills are a legitimate response to increasing military pressure from the United States and its allies in the region, reaffirming its right to defense and self-determination in the face of external threats.
