As missile exchanges between Israel and Iran stretch into a second week, Russian President Vladimir Putin has stepped forward with a call for urgent de-escalation and a diplomatic resolution. Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin emphasized that the interests of both Iran and Israel can be addressed through negotiation, not war.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong condemnation of the Israeli attacks, labeling them “unprovoked military strikes against sleeping peaceful cities” and a flagrant violation of international law.

Russian officials also accused Western powers of fueling “anti-Iran hysteria” and provoking instability in the Middle East, echoing long-standing critiques from progressive and anti-imperialist voices.

Putin highlighted Russia’s longstanding cooperation with Iran on peaceful nuclear energy, including the Bushehr nuclear plant, and insisted that Iran’s right to civilian nuclear development must be guaranteed.

At the same time, he acknowledged Israeli security concerns, stating that “a solution can be found” to satisfy both sides if approached with care and respect for sovereignty.

Putin revealed that Moscow has presented concrete proposals to Iran, Israel, and the United States, and is ready to act as a mediator. He stressed that Russia is not imposing its will, but offering a diplomatic path forward, and that the ultimate decision rests with the political leadership of the countries involved.

In response to recent statements by Israeli and U.S. leaders about targeting Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Putin categorically rejected even discussing such possibilities, calling them dangerous and irresponsible.

He underscored that threats and violence will only deepen the crisis, while dialogue and mutual guarantees are the only way to prevent catastrophe.

Progressive governments and movements across the Global South have echoed Russia’s call for an end to the aggression and for the respect of Iran’s sovereignty. The Russian position, supported by China and other anti-imperialist states, frames the crisis as a test of whether international law and diplomacy can prevail over militarism and Western interventionism.
