On Saturday, Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, 39, was wounded by gunfire in Salt Lake City during one of hundreds of nationwide protests held under the slogan “No Kings” to oppose Trump’s policies. Redd that Ah Loo was accidentally injured during the protest.
Arturo Gamboa, a man carrying an AR-15 rifle, was arrested and jailed on a murder charge. The findings are preliminary and must be confirmed by prosecutors, given that Gamboa did not fire his weapon.
The shooting occurred around 8 p.m. when Gamboa broke away from the crowd and brandished the AR-15. Members of the protest’s peacekeeping team, wearing fluorescent green vests, confronted him with their weapons drawn.
Witnesses said Gamboa raised his rifle into firing position and ran toward the crowd. At that point, one of the peacekeepers opened fire, striking Gamboa and accidentally hitting Ah Loo, who later died at the hospital. The man who shot Gamboa has not been charged and is cooperating with police, Redd said.
Gamboa had no prior criminal record, according to the police chief, who said investigators are in the early stages of determining his possible motives.
The shooting sparked panic among the crowd in Salt Lake City and came hours after a Minnesota state legislator was killed in her home in what appears to be a politically motivated crime. The U.S. is currently gripped by intense political polarization, particularly since Trump’s 2024 election victory.
