President Xiomara Castro Votes in Honduras’ Primary Elections

The Honduran president exercised suffrage in the primary elections at the Álvaro Contreras school in the city of Catacamas, in the department of Olancho, along with her husband, former president Manuel Zelaya.

Castro said that currently, the figures of investments in public spending show that the people’s money is repaid in their well-being compared to the difficult conditions in which the country was when she and Zelaya took power.

Regarding some of her government achievements, Castro highlighted that was a transitional government from dictatorship to democracy, and recalled that progress had been made in establishing democracy and order, including the repeal of laws contrary to the Constitution.

Regarding the delays reported in the arrival of materials for the vote, he commented that the CNE (National Electoral Council) must promptly provide a report on what happened.

He appealed to the CNE regarding these arrears, and stated that when the machines arrive they must open the schools and allow the population to take their decision to the ballot box and underline that no one can be denied the opportunity to vote, inviting people to leave their homes and vote.

In her statements, she emphasized that the participation and exercise of government by women demonstrates the democratic spirit of the party that has initiated the refoundation after years of dictatorship. In this regard, she expressed confidence that honesty, justice, and ability will continue to govern, and with that conviction, she cast her vote.

Earlier, the CNE (National Electoral Council) offered statements regarding the irregularities presented during the day. Its Secretary Counselor, Ana Paola Hall, stated that there had been difficulties in the distribution of electoral kits and technological kits in some municipalities, primarily in the Central District and San Pedro Sula.
