‘It is a political matter, and she has our full support,’ the Mexican leader said.

On Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her solidarity with former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez (2007–2015) after Argentina’s Supreme Court upheld a six-year prison sentence and disqualified her from holding public office.

“Yes, all our solidarity goes to Cristina. From our point of view, it is a political matter, and she has our full support,” Sheinbaum said during her morning press conference.

Sheinbaum’s gesture came one day after the Argentine Supreme Court rejected the appeal filed by Fernandez against the 2022 ruling, which cited alleged irregularities in the awarding of public road contracts.

The unanimous decision by the three Supreme Court justices will now move forward with Fernandez’s arrest in the coming days so she can begin serving her sentence. Fernandez has denounced the ruling as a case of “Lawfare,” referring to the use of legal systems for political persecution.

The text reads, “Now, in the middle of the night, thousands of people in Argentina continue to take to the streets to support Cristina Fernandez against lawfare.”

In a speech outside the Justicialist Party (PJ) headquarters, Fernandez said the judges who upheld her sentence “are puppets who answer to higher powers” and described them as a “triumvirate of disgrace.”

The 72-year-old politician had announced last week her intention to run as a provincial legislator in elections scheduled for September in Buenos Aires Province, the largest electoral district in Argentina.

Sheinbaum and Fernandez have had a close relationship marked by mutual admiration. After winning the Mexican election, Sheinbaum invited the Argentine leftist leader to her transition house, where they discussed the importance of supporting alternatives to neoliberal governments.
