President Putin at BRICS Summit: The Unipolar System of International Relations Is Becoming a Thing of the Past

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by videoconference at the 17th BRICS summit, launched in Rio de Janeiro this Sunday, addressing hard critics on the current international relationships stressing tha “The liberal globalization model is becoming obsolete.”

“The process of changing the global economic order continues to gain momentum. Everything indicates that the liberal globalization model is becoming obsolete. The center of business activity is shifting towards developing markets, which is driving a powerful wave of growth, even in the BRICS countries,” he said.
Putin also stressed that BRICS member states, despite gather different models of development, religions, civilizations and cultures, advocate for equality, good neighbourliness, priority of traditional values, and ideals of friendship and harmony, seeking to contribute to global stability and security.
According to the Russian leader, the unipolar system of international relations, which served the interests of the “golden billion,” is becoming a thing of the past and is being replaced by a fairer and more multipolar order.
Putin mentioned the importance of activating cooperation between BRICS countries in key areas such as technology, resource exploitation, logistics, trade and finance.
The growing use of national currencies in trade between members and the need to expand this process, as well as increased reciprocal investment through BRICS mechanisms were also highlighted.
BRICS, initially gathering Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has expanded significantly in the last years, to include leading states from Eurasia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, possessing enormous political, economic, scientific, technological, and human potential.
Furthermore, Putin highlighted that the BRICS countries account for not only a third of the Earth’s surface and nearly half of the planet’s population, but also 40 percent of the global economy.
In terms of purchasing power parity, the total market value of BRICS already reached $77 trillion by 2025, significantly exceeding other associations such as the G7, whose index for the same period is $57 trillion.
