El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele appointed military Captain Karla Trigueros as the country’s new Minister of Education, replacing José Mauricio Pineda, who had held the position since February 2022.
“If we want to build the country we deserve, we must break paradigms,” Bukele posted on X. “The new minister, who is both a captain and a doctor, has shown the leadership, capability, and commitment needed to drive a deep transformation of our education system.”
Bukele added that her mission will be to “prepare future generations to successfully face tomorrow’s challenges and to meet the highest quality standards required by the new El Salvador we are building.”
This event comes amid critics’ concerns about El Salvador’s political landscape, after Congress lifted the limit on Presidential terms, allowing Bukele to run for reelection and remain in charge without a time limit.
Trigueros responded on X, saying she accepts “with deep gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility the honor of serving as Minister of Education.”
According to UNICEF El Salvador, Trigueros previously served as a medical advisor for the Military Health Command, where she was in charge of coordinating the logistics for the reception, storage, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.
At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the U.S., Bukele responded to a question from Catalina Stubbe, the Hispanic outreach coordinator for Moms for Liberty, by saying that for him, “it’s not just important that the curriculum excludes gender ideology and all those things, but also that parents are informed and have a voice and a vote in what their children are learning.”
