Since 2020, Brazil and the China National Petroleum Corporation have been operating jointly in this block.

On Friday, the Brazilian company Petrobras announced that it had discovered high-quality oil in ultra-deep waters of the Santos Basin in the Atlantic Ocean.

The oil field was discovered in a well located in the Aram block, situated at a depth of 1,952 meters and 248 kilometers from the city of Santos, on the coast of Sao Paulo state.

This is the second discovery of high-quality crude in the same block this year, following the identification in March of another reserve at a depth of 1,759 meters in a different well.

Petrobras will begin specialized analyses to determine the conditions of the reserves and the fluids found, in order to assess the potential of the discovered area. The Brazilian company will also drill two additional wells.

The text reads: “With Lula in command, Petrobras breaks records in the pre-salt sector, increases domestic sales, and exports renewable fuel to Asia. The state-owned company resumes its strategic role in Brazil’s development.”

In March 2020, the Aram block was acquired by a consortium led by Petrobras, which holds an 80% stake and acts as the operator, in partnership with the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), which holds the remaining 20%.

Aram is located in the Santos Basin, an extensive offshore area in the Atlantic Ocean with petroleum potential, situated in the pre-salt region. The pre-salt fields are located in ultra-deep waters beneath a two-kilometer-thick salt layer and currently account for 79.8% of Brazil’s oil and gas production.

In the first quarter of 2025, Petrobras produced a daily average of 3.97 million barrels of oil and oil-equivalent gas, representing a 3.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
