Pablo Grillo, the photographer who was severely injured on March 12 in Plaza Congreso, Buenos Aires, has shown significant progress in his recovery after 56 days in intensive care. This Wednesday, Grillo stepped out onto the balcony of the medical center where he is hospitalized, marking a milestone in his healing process as he was able to breathe without assistance, according to local media.
Since his admission to the hospital, Grillo has demonstrated remarkable evolution. On March 20, he managed to open his eyes and move his hands; on March 23, he wrote his name and the word “grandparents,” and by April 1, he was already walking a few steps.
His progress culminated on May 5 when he began to breathe independently, a hopeful sign following the violent incident that left him with severe injuries due to a tear gas canister fired during a police crackdown.

Despite these advancements, doctors have indicated that Grillo will need a cranial prosthesis to continue his recovery. Legally, the case is under the supervision of Judge María Servini, who has identified police officer Héctor Guerrero as the alleged shooter who injured Grillo.
The photographer’s family, supported by the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) and the Argentine League for Human Rights, has become a plaintiff in this case.
Additionally, the Police Map has presented evidence indicating an intentional shot, leading organizations such as the Argentine Association of Graphic Reporters (ARGRA) and the Buenos Aires Press Union (SiPreBA) to demand the resignation of Interior Minister Patricia Bullrich for her responsibility in the operation on March 12.
Pablo Grillo’s situation not only highlights the severity of police repression in Argentina but also the struggle for justice and human rights in the country. His recovery is a symbol of hope for many and a reminder of the need to address issues of abuse of power in protest contexts.
