New York will receive 400,000 fewer tourists this year compared to the previous year after the ‘Trump effect’ and the negative reactions that the president has unleashed among foreign travelers, especially those from Canada.

According to the travel agency New York City Tourism and Conventions, in 2025 there will be 400,000 more domestic tourists travelling to the Big Apple than last year, but 800,000 fewer foreign travellers.

In addition, the organization, which issued positive forecasts for tourism in the city earlier this year, reduced its initial forecast from 67.6 million visitors in total to 64.1 million.

Currently, 12.1 million international tourists are expected in 2025, in contrast to the 14.1 million previously forecast and, although domestic travelers will be less impacted, almost one million fewer people will visit the city, according to data from the agency.

Analysts link this decline in the international scene with political pronouncements on the tariff and migration measures of the Donald Trump administration.

Looking ahead to the coming years (2027, 2028 and 2029), this trend is expected to improve and see faster growth than forecast two months ago, according to Tourism Economics chairman Adam Sacks.

Sacks also indicated that with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in collaboration with Mexico and Canada, the start of recovery could begin that year, once economic uncertainty has passed and the domestic market is growing.
