Nigerian officials estimate that over 500 people remain missing and presumed dead following devastating flash floods in Mokwa, Niger State, which began on May 29.
The floods flattened entire neighborhoods, killing hundreds and displacing thousands. Key roads and bridges were destroyed, disrupting movement and economic activity.
The United Nations and Nigerian authorities are leading recovery efforts, with agencies providing medicine, shelter, and emergency aid.
- WHO is preparing to ship medical supplies.
- IOM is providing temporary shelters and food assistance.
- UNFPA is establishing safe spaces for displaced women and girls, offering maternal health services and psychosocial support.
Nigeria’s rainy season (April–October) has made the country increasingly prone to severe flooding. Experts warn that climate change and rising water temperatures are exacerbating disasters across Africa.
