This Wednesday, the Nicaraguan government expressed its satisfaction over the return of Maikelys Espinoza Bernal, made possible through the efforts of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

In a statement signed by President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo, officials highlighted the significance of her homecoming during Mother’s Month, extending greetings to the Venezuelan people and the girl’s mother, Yarely Bernal.

The Nicaraguan government emphasized that international pressure and the demands of the Venezuelan people were crucial in securing Maikelys’ return after she was separated from her mother under difficult circumstances. The statement condemned the actions leading to this separation, calling them “barbaric” and linking them to broader issues of racism and fascism.

“Our Nicaraguan mothers and our entire nation” united in demanding justice, stressing the need to end what they described as atrocious and discriminatory practices. The government reaffirmed its commitment to social justice and universal values, denouncing what it called global cruelty and intolerance.

Maikelys’ return is part of Venezuela’s “Plan Vuelta a la Patria” (Return to the Homeland Plan), which has facilitated the repatriation of over 22 flights of Venezuelan nationals, many of whom were deported from the U.S. and other regional countries. In a recent flight from Texas, alongside Maikelys, more than 200 Venezuelans—including women and children—were brought back.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello hailed the return as a “great victory” in the daily struggle for Venezuelan citizens’ rights and dignity. Maikelys’ story has captured public attention, symbolizing the struggles of migrant families amid current immigration policies.
