Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has strongly denounced the deliberate bombing of its hospital in Old Fangak, South Sudan, as two helicopter gunships targeted the facility’s pharmacy and opened fire on the town for 30 minutes, killing at least seven people and wounding 20 patients and MSF staff.

The destruction of the hospital’s pharmacy, which housed essential medical supplies for the hospital and outreach programs, has severely impacted MSF’s ability to deliver healthcare to over 110,000 residents—a population that already faced extreme limitations in medical access.

This assault marks the second MSF facility attacked in a month, following the armed looting of its Ulang hospital on April 14, which had already cut off healthcare access for communities in Ulang County. The repeated targeting of humanitarian infrastructure raises grave concerns about systematic attacks on healthcare in South Sudan.

MSF has urged international actors to intervene and hold perpetrators accountable to ensure the protection of medical services in conflict zones. The bombings underscore the growing challenges for humanitarian organizations working in regions affected by war and instability.

As South Sudan’s humanitarian crisis deepens, MSF warns that without urgent action, the continued dismantling of healthcare infrastructure will have catastrophic consequences for vulnerable populations.
