Fifty-two percent of respondents say the U.S. has not become a safer place to live as a result of mass deportations.

On Wednesday, CNN released a poll showing that a majority of U.S. citizens believe President Donald Trump has gone too far in the deportations of undocumented immigrants.

Fifty-two percent of respondents say the U.S. has not become a safer place to live as a result of the deportations. Additionally, 56% support the return to the U.S. of Kilmar Abrego, a migrant who was sent to a prison in El Salvador despite having a court order protecting him from deportation.

The poll, conducted by the research firm SSRS between April 17 and 24 among 1,678 adults, reflects a growing disapproval of Trump’s immigration policy, which the same survey placed at 45% in February.

In the past two months, the percentage of people who agree with the Trump administration’s immigration policy has dropped from 39% to 33%. About 43% of those surveyed say the government has been very or somewhat careful in following the law regarding deportations, while 57% believe the opposite.

Trump has invoked the Alien Enemies Act—until now only used during wartime—to fulfill his promise of carrying out historic mass deportations, amid controversy and criticism from immigrant advocacy organizations.

He has insisted on the need to protect the U.S. from “dangerous criminals” associated with organizations such as the Aragua Train, a gang that Venezuelan authorities dismantled some time ago in their country. The CNN poll shows that 49% of people oppose using the Alien Enemies Act to speed up deportations.

This week, other polls revealed that Trump’s approval rating is just 41% after his first 100 days in office. This is the lowest approval rating for any president since at Dwight Eisenhower (1953-1961).

Furthermore, a recent CNN poll also showed that 59% of Americans believe the president’s policies have contributed to the deterioration of the country’s economy.
