Donald Trump appoints Mike Waltz as the new U.S. ambassador to the UN after his removal as National Security Advisor, in a context of leaks and internal purges driven by the far right.

In a decision that reveals the internal turmoil of the Trump administration, the U.S. president announced the nomination of Mike Waltz, until now his National Security Advisor, as the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. The move comes just hours after Waltz was removed from his position following a sensitive information leak scandal and amid pressure from the far right to purge officials deemed “disloyal.”

Waltz’s departure follows the so-called “Signalgate,” an episode in which Waltz himself, by mistake, included the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic in a Signal chat where senior officials discussed operational details about U.S. airstrikes in Yemen. Although both Trump and Waltz downplayed the incident, claiming that no classified information was leaked, the revelation of attack plans and bombing schedules caused alarm and calls for an investigation from both critical Democrats and Republicans.

The removal of Waltz and other National Security Council officials cannot be understood without the context of a far-right offensive within Trumpism. Activist Laura Loomer, known for her conspiracy theories and close ties to Trump, personally pressured the president to purge those she considered insufficiently loyal to the “America First” agenda. Loomer publicly celebrated the ousting of Waltz and his deputy Alex Wong, calling the dismissal a “trophy” in her internal crusade.

Far from being a simple removal, Waltz’s nomination as ambassador to the UN seeks to avoid an open confrontation and a possible internal political crisis. Trump opted for an “elegant” exit for Waltz, moving him to a high-profile diplomatic post but one less influential in national security policy, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio temporarily assumes the role of National Security Advisor. This maneuver aims to calm the waters in a cabinet shaken by infighting and management scandals.

The purge of Waltz and other officials marks an even sharper turn to the far right in the Trump administration, where personal loyalty to the president and a nationalist agenda outweigh any technical or institutional considerations. Progressive analysts warn that these moves undermine the professionalism of the U.S. state apparatus and strengthen the influence of radicalized figures, with possible negative consequences for foreign policy and the country’s democratic stability.

Waltz’s nomination to the UN, far from being a simple change of names, highlights the deep governance crisis and internal radicalization that the Trump administration faces in its second term.
