Six men and five women were wounded in what authorities are calling a “random act.” The suspect, a 42-year-old Michigan resident, is in custody, Sheriff Michael D. Shea said.

“Based on the information we have at this time, these were random acts,” Shea said, adding that he did not yet know the victims’ conditions.

However, Munson Healthcare, the hospital treating the injured, reported that six victims are in critical condition and five are in serious condition.

“Our hearts remain with the victims and their families,” the hospital said in a statement, also thanking its staff for their efficient response.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in the checkout area. The suspect used a folding knife, according to Shea, who noted that “citizen involvement ended the attack.”

Among the witnesses was Julia Martell, who was in an aisle at Walmart when she heard screaming and saw a man with a knife running through the pharmacy area, according to The New York Times.

Martell said the man was pushing and stabbing people as he moved through the store. He then changed direction and ran toward her. She saw the knife in his hand—with a blade roughly two inches long—and began to run.

The man did not follow her and instead headed toward the store entrance. He was arrested about three minutes after police arrived.
