The Malian Armed Forces successfully repelled an attack on a military camp in Timbuktu on Monday morning, killing 13 assailants, according to official reports.

Local sources confirmed that a car bomb exploded in the city center, followed by gunfire, before soldiers swiftly neutralized the attackers. The army stated that weaponry and vehicles were seized, and the situation is now under control.

The Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) claimed responsibility for the attack, marking its second strike in two days.

On Sunday, JNIM attacked a military base in Boulkessi, near the Burkina Faso border, killing over 30 Malian soldiers. The Malian army was forced to retreat but has not confirmed the exact number of casualties.

Since May 2025, insurgents have reportedly killed more than 400 soldiers across Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, as jihadist groups continue their offensive.
