On June 10, 2025, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency and imposed a curfew for parts of downtown Los Angeles, effective from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The curfew covers roughly one square mile, bounded by the 5 Freeway to the 110 Freeway and from the 10 Freeway to the junction where the 110 and 5 freeways merge. This zone includes key protest hotspots such as the Metropolitan Detention Center and federal buildings.

The curfew aims to curb the recent surge in vandalism, looting, and violence that followed largely peaceful protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

Mayor Bass indicated the curfew could last several days, with decisions on its continuation to be made in coordination with law enforcement and elected officials. Residents living within the curfew zone, homeless individuals, accredited media, and emergency personnel are exempt.

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), California Highway Patrol (CHP), and National Guard forces will enforce the curfew. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell warned that anyone found outside without exemption during curfew hours will face arrest. Businesses within the zone must close by 8 p.m., except essential services like hospitals and pharmacies.

The curfew follows five days of protests sparked by federal immigration enforcement actions, which escalated after the deployment of U.S. Marines and National Guard troops to Los Angeles. While daytime demonstrations have been mostly peaceful, nights have seen looting, vandalism, and confrontations with police, resulting in over 200 arrests since Friday.

Mayor Bass urged residents to avoid the affected downtown area during curfew hours and called for peaceful expression of grievances. She emphasized the city’s commitment to protecting public safety while respecting the right to protest.
