After 11 weeks of blockade, Israel has allowed a small number of aid trucks to enter the Gaza Strip, delivering baby food and essential supplies, according to COGAT, the Israeli defense body overseeing aid coordination.
The decision came after growing diplomatic pressure, particularly from the United States, Britain, and the European Union, with leaders condemning Gaza’s worsening humanitarian disaster as “unacceptable.”
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini expressed hope for a broader breakthrough, stating:
“Gaza needs massive, unhindered, uninterrupted assistance to reverse the spread of hunger.”
- Before Israel broke the ceasefire on March 18, 600 aid trucks entered Gaza daily.
- The enclave’s entire population—2 million people—remains at critical risk of famine.
- Over the weekend, Israel launched a new wave of air and ground attacks, ordering the evacuation of Khan Younis, Gaza’s second-largest city.
France, Canada, and the UK issued a joint warning, threatening concrete measures if Israel does not halt military operations and fully restore humanitarian access.
“We strongly oppose Israel’s military expansion in Gaza. The level of human suffering is intolerable. The aid announced yesterday is wholly inadequate,” the statement read.
