Kenya and China have launched discussions to establish local vaccine and pharmaceutical production centers, a $500 million initiative aimed at strengthening Kenya’s healthcare system and reducing import dependency.
Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale met with Chinese Ambassador Guo Haiyan to discuss the project, which is expected to be fully operational by 2028. The initiative seeks to boost Kenya’s pharmaceutical supply chains, create jobs, and position the country as a continental leader in medical manufacturing.
China has pledged 500 scholarships and 20 annual health exchange programs to support Kenya’s next generation of healthcare professionals. Additionally, Chinese technology firms like Huawei have been instrumental in equipping rural health facilities and training thousands of health workers.
The agreement follows Kenyan President William Ruto’s visit to China in April, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to Africa, emphasizing that its policy of sincerity, friendship, and mutual respect will remain unchanged.
