The victim, identified as Zahia Jouda Al Obeidi, died from a gunshot wound to the head, the Jerusalem Governorate—a Palestinian Authority body governing parts of the West Bank—reported.

Israeli police announced in an early morning statement that they have launched an investigation into the death of a resident from “a neighborhood in East Jerusalem,” who arrived at the Shuafat checkpoint—between the neighborhood and the refugee camp of the same name—with “serious injuries” and was later declared dead by medical personnel attending to her there.

“Following the initial report, officers from the Shuafat police station, in the Jerusalem district, began investigating the incident,” the police statement said.

Since the beginning of 2025, at least 146 Palestinians have died in the West Bank, including 27 minors, with four fatalities recorded in the Jerusalem Governorate alone, including two minors, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), updated through June 19.

East Jerusalem, where Shuafat is located, was occupied by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1980—, although the international community does not recognize such annexation and considers thi area occupied Palestinian territory. The region experiences a heavy Israeli military and police presence, with frequent raids on Palestinian homes, fueling ongoing tensions between Israeli forces and local residents.
