In the early hours of June 13, 2025, Israeli forces launched a military strike against Tehran that killed Major General Hossein Salami, commander-in-chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to Iranian state media and the Tasnim news agency.

The attack also claimed the lives of two prominent Iranian nuclear scientists, Fereydoun Abbasi and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, who were martyred in the aggression. Other senior military figures, including Major General Gholam Ali Rashid, were also among the casualties.

The Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple locations in Tehran, including residential buildings, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries. The severity of the attack led to the temporary suspension of flights at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, causing significant disruption in the Iranian capital.

Iranian officials condemned the strike as a blatant act of aggression by Israel. The IRGC and other military leaders warned of a strong and immediate response to any further attacks. Major General Salami had previously emphasized Iran’s preparedness to counter any military aggression, underscoring the country’s strategic readiness.

This strike is part of a broader pattern of escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, with Israel targeting Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure. The killing of such a high-ranking military official and key nuclear scientists marks a significant intensification of the conflict, raising concerns about further escalation in the region.

The attack has heightened tensions across the Middle East, with fears of retaliation and wider conflict. The targeting of military, scientific, and civilian sites in a capital city signals a dangerous new phase in the ongoing confrontation between Israel and Iran.
