Israeli Authorities Impose Military Restrictions Ahead of Flag March in Jerusalem

Israeli authorities tightened military restrictions on Palestinian movement in the Old City of Jerusalem, erecting iron barriers at Damascus Gate and other entrances as tensions escalated ahead of the annual Flag March.
Palestinian residents faced disruptions to daily life as Israeli forces intensified their presence, blocking key areas such as Bab al-Amud and the al-Wad neighborhood, both densely populated by Palestinians.
During the march, a settler defiantly raised an Israeli flag inside Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, while thousands gathered at the Western Wall Plaza. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and far-right Otzma Yehudit party members participated in the incursion, which analysts view as a violation of the historic status quo and a destabilizing act in the region.
Palestinian media have reported an uptick in settler violence, including vandalism, theft, and attacks in occupied West Bank settlements. Since Israel’s military offensive on Gaza began in October 2023, incursions into Al-Aqsa have intensified, with calls to increase these actions—especially on Mondays.
The Flag March, also known as the “Dance of the Flags,” is held annually on the 28th day of Iyar, marking Jerusalem Day, the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967. International observers and analysts see the event as a display of Jewish nationalist supremacy, further exacerbating religious and territorial tensions.
