The discussions will cover economic and trade cooperation, border security, and developments in the region and beyond. Previously, on Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei announced that Araghchi will also travel to India later this week as part of an official visit.
Araghchi’s regional tour comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following a deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, in Indian-controlled Kashmir, on April 22.
Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri-Moghaddam described the Islamabad visit as a key step toward establishing a roadmap for sustained cooperation between Iran and Pakistan. He added that Araghchi would also seek to explore options for easing tensions between India and Pakistan, citing Iran’s friendly ties with both nations.
On Monday, Araghchi and Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar agreed on the need to resort to diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the “evolving situation in South Asia.”
“Both India and Pakistan are friendly countries of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and, of course, Pakistan is our neighboring and brotherly country. We were interested in being informed of the positions of our friends in Pakistan before traveling to India,” the Iranian foreign minister said after the meeting with Dar.
During the meeting, the two ministers also discussed the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States. They agreed that these “complex issues could be resolved through diplomacy and negotiations.”
