The Iranian diplomat accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of attempting to derail the negotiations after U.S. network Fox News published maps of alleged secret Iranian nuclear facilities.
On April 12, Iran and the United States began indirect negotiations mediated by Oman and have so far held three rounds, which both parties have described as positive. A fourth round was scheduled for last Saturday in Rome, but Washington declined to participate on Thursday.
As a consequence of the cancellation of that meeting, a planned gathering between Iran and the United Kingdom, Germany, and France—the European signatories of the 2015 nuclear agreement that the United States withdrew from in 2018—was also postponed.
Since the cancellation of the last round, Iran has reiterated its right to operate a nuclear program after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he seeks the “total dismantling” of the Persian atomic program. Additionally, the United States announced a truce with Yemen’s Houthis, one of Iran’s allies—a negotiation that Iran played a role in mediating through Oman.
Points of friction between the two countries still persist. While Iran seeks the lifting of economic sanctions and only to limit its nuclear capacity, the United States has also pointed to Iran’s missile program and Tehran’s support for regional groups such as the Houthis.
Tehran insists it will not negotiate its right to enrich uranium, while Washington has mentioned the possibilities of either completely dismantling Iran’s nuclear program or having it acquire enriched uranium from another country.
